June is Garage Door Safety Month

The International Door Association and the Door & Access Systems Manufacturers Association have designated June as Garage Door Safety Month. The IDA and its affiliated dealers will be working to increase awareness of the possible hazards of garage doors and automatic opener systems, and the need for periodic inspection and maintenance to keep them safe. I have several Google News Alerts (a tool that e-mails you news stories related to keywords of your choosing) that help keep me abreast of industry-related issues. Typically, “garage door” keywords turn up short blurbs on break-ins where burglars entered through open doors. But the last week has returned more grisly results.

Proposed Safety Legislation Causes Controversy

When the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CSPC) Reform Act popped up in Washington, D.C., last November, it contained several sections regarding consumer safety products - including a portion that attempts to clarify UL325 standards. If passed, it will be the first time Congress has stepped in to mandate safety standards to the garage door industry in more than 15 years.

Some in the industry say this congressional directive is necessary, while others call lobbyists for the bill self-serving and disingenuous. But all agree that the current UL325 standard needs clarification. What they can’t seem to agree on is how to do it.
